Step 07 — Plant Dye Sources
The plant kingdom is extraordinarily generous to dyers. Roots, bark, leaves, flowers, berries, husks, and heartwood all contain pigments that, with the right preparation, can transfer permanently to fibre. This note surveys the main categories of plant dye sources and introduces the ones most worth knowing.
Yellows and Golds — The Easiest Starting Point
Yellow is by far the most common colour in the plant world. Nearly every plant contains some flavonoid pigment that produces yellow or gold on an alum-mordanted fibre. For beginners, this is good news: your first dyebath is almost certain to produce something warm and golden.
Onion skins (yellow/brown variety) are the classic beginner dye. They’re free, they’re everywhere, and they produce a reliable, fairly lightfast golden yellow. Collect the dry outer skins over several weeks before a dye session.
Weld (Reseda luteola) is historically one of the most important European yellow dyes — records go back to the Neolithic. It produces a clear, bright yellow with good lightfastness, far better than most plant yellows.
Woad and Japanese indigo are different — they produce blue (discussed in Step 16 — Fermentation Vats — Indigo and Beyond) — but their leaves can also yield greenish yellows if processed differently.
Reds, Pinks, and Oranges
True reds from plants are harder to achieve than yellows. Most plant reds are anthocyanins — pH-sensitive pigments that shift dramatically with the mordant and afterbath used (see Step 11 — Colour Modifiers and Afterbaths).
Madder (Rubia tinctorum) is the great exception: a root dye that produces genuine, lightfast reds, oranges, and pinks depending on mordant and pH. It has been cultivated for dyeing for over 5,000 years and remains one of the most versatile and reliable natural dyes.
Henna (Lawsonia inermis) produces orange-red on protein fibres and is most familiar as a hair and skin dye, but it works on fabric too.
Brazilwood, sappanwood, and related heartwood dyes give vivid crimson-pinks but have moderate lightfastness.
Browns and Tans
Browns are almost effortless — walnut husks, oak bark, tea, and many garden plants naturally produce warm brown tones, often without any mordant at all.
Black walnut (Juglans nigra) husks produce a rich, dark brown that stains skin, fabric, and anything else it touches with remarkable tenacity. No mordant is needed; the juglone in walnut is its own fixing agent.
Oak bark and galls provide tannin-rich browns and are also valuable as a tannin pre-treatment for cellulose fibres (see Step 05 — Natural Fibres and Fabric Preparation).
Greens and Blues
Green is surprisingly elusive in the plant world — most “green” dyes are actually yellows over-dyed with blue, or the result of an iron modifier turning a yellow olive. True botanical greens are rare.
Blue from plants means indigo — either the tropical Indigofera tinctoria or its temperate relatives woad and Japanese indigo. Unlike most plant dyes, indigo requires a fermentation vat rather than a simple dyebath. This process is detailed in Step 16 — Fermentation Vats — Indigo and Beyond.
Foraging vs. Buying
Many excellent dye plants grow in gardens or hedgerows — onion skins, goldenrod, black-eyed Susan, Japanese indigo, and weld can all be grown or foraged. However, some of the most powerful dyes (madder, weld, woad, indigo) are easier to source as dried plant material or extract from specialist dye suppliers, especially for your first experiments.
When foraging, always identify plants accurately, take only what you need, and never strip a wild plant entirely. Ethical gathering sustains both the plant population and your future supply.
